The main detox organ in your body is your liver – and it needs support to do its job right.

In order to effectively support your liver, you need to understand the two phase detox process. Phase one is when the liver gets rid of toxins by oxidation. Oxidation “burns” the toxins and makes them more water-soluble. By converting toxins in this way, the liver makes them more easy to excrete. This process can convert fat-soluble toxins into a form that is easier for your body to deal with.

Then comes Phase two, which takes the water-soluble toxin remains and combines them with the chemical sulphur, amino acids or other organic acids. What the liver is doing is trying to make the toxins as safe as possible before they are moved from the liver to other organs for elimination.

These processes require a lot of resources – and the liver itself can become damaged over time from the amount of toxins that it has to deal with. This can mean that the organ is less effective – and we will have more free toxins floating around in our body.

This makes supporting your liver’s 2 phase detox process critical. And you can add two key supplements to do that:

  • milk thistle
  • SAMe

Milk thistle

Milk thistle is an herb that has been known to human for over 2,000 years. Current practices have us using it for inflammatory conditions of the liver, while research shows it to be both safe and effective.

The two main phytochemicals in milk thistle that support the liver are silymarin and silybinin. These are powerful antioxidants will support liver function, even to the point of addressing liver damage.

When taking a milk thistle product, look for an extract that is standardized to 80 per cent silymarin and 20 per cent silybinin.

SAMe also supports your liver, but in this case by helping the liver to produce its own master antioxidant, glutathione. SAMe is a precursor to this important antioxidant.
