Nutritional deficiencies can play a key role in many skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and wrinkles. Try these nutritional solutions for any of these troublesome conditions.

Eczema

Eczema — a spotty rash of red, itchy, dry, cracked skin—is the number one main reason why Americans see a skin doctor, with the problem afflicting 21 million adults and 11 million children.

Reach for fish oils containing omeg-3s. German researchers studied 54 people with eczema, dividing them into two groups. One group took 6 grams a day of the anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and the other group did not. After 3 months, the DHA group had a 24% improvement in symptoms, compared with a 7 percent reduction for the placebo group. The results were in the British Journal of Dermatology.

Rub in B12 too. A cream containing vitamin B12 improves the scratchiness and redness associated with eczema by almost 50% more than a placebo cream, reported German researcher in the British Journal of Dermatology. And a study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine discovered that vitamin B12 was “significantly more” effective than a placebo in relieving eczema symptoms in 22 children.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin disorder that is associated with red, flaky, scaly lesions that can be itchy, cracked, bleed, and painful.

Take in more vitamin E. An antioxidant supplement containing at least 45-50 milligrams of vitamin E (as well as coenzyme Q10 and selenium) reduced the symptoms of severe psoriasis, Russian researchers reported.

Heal with aloe vera. A study done showed that applying aloe vera to psoriasis lesions two to three times a day in a month’s time cured 84% of people of their psoriasis compared to 7% for the placebo.

Rosacea

14 million people in America are affected by rosacea, which is a skin disorder with symptoms similar to that of acne, and includes redness, flushing, broken blood vessels, dry, oily, or both.

Put Zinc to the rescue. A study done on 19 people who had rosacea, had those people take 100 milligrams of zinc three two to three times a day. At the end of the study, they saw a significant decrease in their symptoms.

Check your stomach acid. If you have rosacea often times there may be a deficiency of stomach acid, even if you have acid indigestion.

Wrinkles

Those tall tale signs tell you that age is creeping up on you.

Go fish to iron out wrinkles. Women between the age of 40-60 who consumed a fish oil supplement for four months had a 11% increase in skin elasticity, reported German researchers in the Journal of Dermatology Treatment. To get more fish oil in your diet, eat two to three servings of salmon or tuna a week. The supplement that is recommended is Vectomega which replaces 9 to 17 capsules of a ordinary fish oil, making this an easier product to take.

Try antioxidants too! Healthy women who consumed a daily supplement containing antioxidants for 4 months that included 4.8 milligrams of beta-carotene had skin that was more firm, smoother, and supple reported German researchers.
